Whiff of Joy Angel Stamps + Hero Arts Background Stamps +Tim Holtz Distress Ink = perfection.
I was laying in bed the other night and it hit me...
adorable little Melinda would look great colored in yellows/golds/naturals against a wheat field backdrop.
I am from Kansas after all.
Here is how I colored Miss Melinda Blowing Kisses using Copics, masking and Distress Inks:
First, I stamped her on Neenah Solar White cardstock, masking off Melinda so that I could stamp her "standing" on the tree stump. Then I added a mask of the tree stump and stamped over the design with Hero Arts Silhouette Grass Background using Scattered Straw Distress Ink (which I think can be a wheat field...use your imagination).
And the masks look bad. Because I have used them a few times. Love that you can reuse them.
However, they did not make it past this card. I tore them because they were so saturated with distress ink that they softened and tore when I went to remove them. Bummer.
Leaving the masks in place, I used the Ranger Ink Blending tool to add Scattered Straw Distress Ink around the image.
I wanted to add even more distressing so I stamped the Hero Arts Old Letter Writing Background stamp over the entire piece using Scattered Straw Distress Ink. I added Vintage Photo Distress Ink around the edges, going darker around the bottom of the piece.
Time to remove the masks and color in Melinda.
Usually I will color first and add the background last.
I'll tell you why I opted not to this time.
Copic coloring can be a bit more time consuming.
I had already colored her once and boogered up the background.
I was mad.
So I chose to do background first. Melinda second. Easy as that. ;)
I always start with skin on people. Not sure why. I just do. Here are the colors I used:
I love how it starts feeling like you're making the stamped image come to life.
Next up: the tree stump and grass.
Shirt and hairbands first in soft, muted yellows.
Wings in really soft yellow/pinks.
Then pants using Copic colors: E50 Egg Shell, E51 Milky White, E53 Raw Silk (not pictured):
Finally it's time to add the details with a bit of bling.
I like Copic Spica glitter pens.
Easy and tons of glittery sparkle.
I used Clear, Buttermilk, Gold and Chocolate.
To complete the card, I trimmed the piece down, added a patterned paper background to my card, layered on some vellum, added ribbon, decorative brads and a stamped greeting on a couple of punched circles and that was that.
