I have currently caught the sewing bug in a big way. I have been collecting fabric and bookmarking patterns and have a "to sew soon" list a mile long!
One reason I am enjoying sewing so much more is that my family gifted me a brand new quilting machine for Mother's Day: the Janome Horizon 7700QCP. I looooove it.
The first project I sewed on my new machine was a baby gift for a friend: some pretty burp cloths. I always thought when my babies were little that burp cloths are often rather ugly. I know they are only going to be used for spit ups and such but still... I like them to be functional and pretty!
And because I felt like these would be a cuter presentation with a finishing touch, I stamped up this quick tag and tied it to the grouping of burp cloths with some pretty ribbon (I forgot to photograph that part...oops!).
The tag was a leftover die cut tag from another project using a KBS digital die cut kit (cut with my Silhouette) and the stamps and other dies are Papertrey Ink. Ribbon is from Stampin' Up. Supplies for the tag are linked at the bottom of this post.
Now about the sewing....
After searching and searching for just the right pattern and coming up empty, I sort of came up with my own based on a store-bought burp cloth. I used the basic shape as my pattern and added a ruffled trim for a decorative and pretty touch.
I decided to use some pretty flannel from Moda's Bonnie & Camille Modern Vintage collection. Check out the flannels HERE and the whole collection HERE. I thought the flannel was a lovely alternative to a cloth diaper or a towel of some sort. It's more absorbant than regular fabric and super soft against a baby's skin.
I sewed a set of 3 using 2 small floral prints and one larger print and backing each with a coordinating houndstooth pattern. I sandwiched a piece of Warm & White Cotton Batting between the layers and also created my own ruffled trim using some Moda Solid fabric and the Janome Ultimate Ruffler for my machine.
Creating the ruffles might be my favorite thing ever. There was something so extremely satisfying about watching my sewing machine create professional looking ruffles and knowing that I was making them. Pretty cool. And I'm pretty sure you'll be seeing lots of ruffles on upcoming sewing shares. I'm addicted.
