Tips & Tricks for Creating Dimensional Scrapbook Layouts 

I'm super excited about this class and the layouts I've created for all you True Scrap 4 attendees are some of my new all-time favorites. I think I might say that each True Scrap event but the texture on each page, theme and style of the layouts and photos on each make me remember just why exactly I love this hobby!

Adding layers to your scrapbook pages doesn’t have to mean unnecessary bulk in your albums. In the “Art of Layering” Nichol Magouirk will focus on design tips and tricks for adding dimension and interest to your scrapbook layouts through the addition of creative layers.

Now, this class is a little shorter than my previous classes, but that doesn't mean it isn't chock-full of creative goodness! The freebies! That's 'on top' of what we use in the class, so it really is appropriately 'the icing.' :)

KBS | Halloween (mini album style)

Today, I am sharing a new layout over on the KBS Blog. And this one has a spooktacular feel to it!

Last year, I started an 8x8 [Halloween Costumes album] featuring the costumes my kids have worn throughout the years. I am slowly starting to get additional layouts finished and put in my album and it's so fun to look back through and see the pictures of my kids and how much they've grown through the years!

When Kerri released her latest [This & That: All Hallows Eve] kit, I knew that the coffin would be the perfect accent for the layout where my kids are dressed as vampires!

For my page I used 9 KBS die cut designs and 1 KBS photo template! I mixed and matched designs from several kits to get just the look I wanted for my page. 

Kits Used:

• This & That: All Hallows Eve ("carpe noctem", coffin, bats, moon, pumpkin, fence)
• Subway Art: Halloween ("there is no escaping")
• This & That: Halloween (gravestone)
• This & That: Autumn (leaves)
• Picture That: Squared (photo template)

For my page, I ungrouped the Halloween Subway Art, keeping only the phrase, "There is no escaping" and positioned it in the Silhouette Software using the Grid feature so I could make sure it cut exactly where I wanted it to. I ran my 8x8 sheet of patterned paper through my machine giving me the negative part of the die cut image. I backed the phrase with scraps of patterned paper.

Next I layered on all my die cut pieces, creating a fun Halloween "scene" for the left side of the 2-page spread and used an 8x8" photo template for the right side of the page, completely filling it with photos from the night.

 

As always, I added "shadows" to my die cut pieces by layering them over a cardstock piece cut the same size but slightly offsetting the patterned paper. This really helps the die cuts to stand out especially when you're layering so many like I did on this page.

I kept additional embellishments to a minimum as the die cuts were embellishment enough for this fun page!

Hello stamping friends!

The girly one goes to Payton who was voted to the Middle School's Student Council last Friday (go, Payton!). She is so bummed that the 6th graders aren't allowed to try out for anything or play school sports however when she found out that, if interested, they could sign up for Student Council she was all over that! And the little stinker was the only girl in her "trail" to be voted in! YAY!!!!

The superhero one goes to my little guy, Ethan, who is finding not talking while his teacher is talking and getting along with a classmate a bit of a challenge this school year. However, he is trying really hard and made quite a bit of improvement last week (if you don't count Friday....sigh). This card is just a way of telling him how proud I am of him for continuing to work hard and learn to get along with others and to be quiet!

And the football themed one is for my oldest, Brenden, who as an 8th grader is playing football for basically the first time (he played flag football as a first grader and one hated season of tackle as a 4th grader). It has been one of the best things he's ever done for himself and so good for him both physically and socially. It was a huge step and I am so very proud of him. I'll be giving him this one Thursday morning before school as a way to say, "Good luck on your game today!".

September Studio AE (a layout)

I'm finally getting around to posting my layout showcasing the September Studio AE Stamp set.

I ended up combining two stamps from this set with several other stamped words/phrases from some of Ali's other brand new CHA-summer stamp sets. I love mixing and matching my stamps as much as I love mixing and matching patterned paper!

This layout combines several older layouts/photos into 1-1 page layout. Instead of having multiple layouts all on one single event, this layout tidies up my albums by telling the story on 1 page. Less bulk. More story. Happy Nichol. I think I used to think I wouldn't have enough photos to scrap so I s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d the photos I had at the time. Most of the pages didn't say anything so I didn't feel bad at all for pulling the photos off and pitching the old layouts in the trash.

Here's the before mess:

I created the background from strips of patterned papers. I had already pretty much planned out that I would use die cut photo frames to resemble instant photos, where my title would go and how to include 2 of the September Studio AE stamps in my title work.

I ran the one sheet of patterned paper (light tan polka dot) through my Cameo to die cut "beyond measure". This way it gave me the reverse die cut look and I could slide a couple of small strips of contrasting patterned paper behind to make those die cuts "pop". 

I die cut the word "Blessed" and layered it over the same word cut from gray cardstock to give it that "shadow" look.

I added one stamped phrase above the die cut title and one below. Both stamped with Hero Arts inks (linked below in supplies).

To compliment the title work and theme of the photos/page, I added a die cut tree branch with fall-inspired/colored leaves, a scarecrow, cornstalks and pumpkins. These all add emphasis to the title, the fall theme and help tie the whole thing together.

Because I had a combination of both black and white and color photos and they were are old photos taken pre-digital I decided to crop them down. But to keep them front and center, I die cut instant frames in several sizes (sized to fit the cropped photos) to help draw your eye in and "ground" them since I was creating a layered photo border with them. The largest photo frame's inside measurement is 4", the middle size 3" and the smallest instant frame's inside measurement is 2x3".

I added a bit of stamping (using stamps from Ali's other brand new stamp sets linked below), word/phrase stickers, Tiny Attacher and mini clips to give each frame some texture and dimension.

I inked up one of Ali's new banner stamps in red and stamped it on the same woodgrain paper as the photo frames (it used up the inside photo frame scrap plus made the words appear to be in "yellow"!), then cut it out with scissors. I added Faded Burlap Distress Ink to the edges to give it some dimension and attached it to the edge of the page with the Tiny Attacher. I cut off what hung off the side of the page.

Stamping Sneak Peek + (lots of) Enabling!

Hello Wednesday!

Because my stamp set didn't arrive until almost 7p.m. last night and because I got tired and went to bed (I just can't seem to "work" at night at all) and because I spent my day running around all over the place and my husband has been out of town since Sunday, it will be one more day for my new stamp set layout share. I appreciate you all being so patient. This little malfunction hopefully won't happen again. It completely throws me off my game. ;)

Here's a sneak of it in process.

My favorites from this line (aside from the super cute collection name):

The journaling cards on this patterned paper are incredible. That skeleton in the vintage carriage...love that one especially. And the backside of this paper? Yep, just as incredible. You better pick up 2 sheets so you can use both patterns!

 

Again, the graphics in this collection really speak to the Halloween-lover in me. Not the cutesy little ghouls and goblins but more a sophisticated flair that reminds me of Pottery Barn's Halloween goodies.

I'm a total sucker for tone on tone paper that could be used for anything, Christmas or not. Gorgeous green and gorgeous red!

 

I rarely glance at the stickers that coordinate with a collection. It's not the stickers fault! I usually just die cut or stamp my own embellishments so I don't fork over the $$$ for the stickers. However, that Santa-face and the pieces on this sticker sheet are too stinkin' cute!
