Simon Says Stamp February 2013 Card Kit | 14 Days of Valentine's Day Inspiration Day #4

Today, I'm sharing a Valentine's paper crafting project that I've had on my "must-do" list for quite some time....

I'm addicted to decorative cloches that showcase small collections of items. I thought it would be fun to take some of the fun components from the Simon Says Stamp February 2013 Card Kit, new (and old!) favorite love-themed stamps and other items from my crafting stash to create a Valentine's Cloche. And just between me and you.... this won't be the last one you will see before February 14th. I'm almost finished with two more! I'm telling ya, they are super addictive!

I loved the tiny polka dot envelopes and doilies in the February 2013 Card Kit and they provided the "base" for most of the embellishments in my cloche. I also incorporated cardstock, the wooden hearts, silk floral and round tag from the February Kit. Additional stamping and supplies from my stash rounded out the "ingredients" for my cloche.

I bought a package of cork "tiles" from my local discount store. The ones you can hang on the wall to create a cork board. They are fairly thin and can easily be cut. I measured the glass opening and created a circle template to trace onto the cork (slightly smaller than the opening on the cloche). I cut out the circle and placed it on the cloche base and added my embellished envelopes and hearts by placing them on Tim Holtz stick pins and pushing them into the cork. Easy peasy!

Simon Says Stamp Valentine’s Day Blog Hop and Giveaway

14 Days of Valentine's Day Inspiration | Day #3

Love is in the air and Simon Says Stamp has made it even more fun to create projects to show someone that you love them with their 2013 Valentine’s Day Release!

 

I was asked to create a project using something from this release to share in today’s Valentine’s Day Blog Hop. I couldn't make just one project. The Valentine's Day Release is so very good and I love it all so I had to make two projects!

I love all the amazing greetings, phrases and text included in the stamp sets and thought it might be fun to create a chalkboard-style background. I stamped the greetings with the Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink on a dark gray cardstock. (Don't you just love the way this ink looks on darker cardstock colors? It. Is. Ah-mazing!)

I stamped heart images and one phrase with Versamark and embossed the images with Rouge Embossing Powder for contrast (and to give that nice red Valentines-y color!).

For this next card, I was inspired by all the gorgeous colors of Hero Arts Mid-Tone Inks and wanted to do something a little different than the traditional red/pink/white Valentine's color scheme. I also wanted to keep this one simple and keep the layers to a minimum but keep the card vibrant and fun!

I started with a white card base where I stamped parts of my greeting (taken from a couple of different stamp sets) using Memories Black Ink and gluing the Simon Says Stamp exclusive "you" die (cut from 6x6 patterned paper) in between for color and interest.

Then I die cut several hearts from the die set that coordinates with the SSS Lots of Hearts Stamp Set and stamped a coordinating heart on each using a bright Hero Arts Mid-Tone Ink. Then I adhered each to the card and finished the front of the card by stamping a tiny, tiny heart around the large die cut stamped hearts using the same colors of ink.

I finished the card by stamping a greeting inside the card. :)

14 Days of Valentine's Day Inspiration | Day #2 (KBS Embellished Frames)

For my second Valentine's inspiration share, I have a set of 3 embellished frames I created for the KBS Blog. I replaced the glass/photos in these distressed wood frames with photo-sized inserts for the holiday. The best part of this project, IMO? Once Valentine's Day is over, I can remove the photo-sized inserts and store them away until next year and replace the glass and photos in my frames for our "everyday" home decor! 

One of the best ways to get multiple tags and hearts in the colors you need for a project (like the first frame shown below) is to use your die cut machine.

KBS Kits Used:

• XOXO (tag, heart)
• December Additions: The Extras (tag hole)

I was able to use up paper scraps from other projects to cut the hearts and cut all the tags from one sheet of 8.5x11 cardstock. The tags were customized by incorporating the shape from the "XOXO" kit with the tag hole from another kit. You could also just create a circle shape in the Silhouette software instead. I just had both files open, figuring out what tag shape I wanted to use so I created mine this way! ;)

I've very much been drawn to the very light pastel pink and neutral color scheme while creating my Valentine's projects and decor this year. It is very much unlike me to use many pastels but I'm a big believer in following your "gut instinct" while being creative and so I'm just going with it! ;)

This next frame features an oversize heart created by combining lots of little die cut flowers, layered and overlapped for a dimensional interesting heart.

I cut a heart shape and attached all the die cut flowers to the heart with tiny, tiny brads. I layered the stamped & embossed banner across the heart with foam adhesive and trimmed off the excess banner/heart before placing it inside the frame.

 

I really wanted to incorporate a Hero Arts clock stamp in my stash into a Valentine's frame. I was perusing my KBS shapes and came across the clock hands file and it dawned on me how cute the stamped shape would look with the die cut hands layered on top! I love that you can recreate this same idea with any clock stamp you may have by simply changing the size of your clock hands to fit! So fun! The eiffel tower and heart die cuts tie the design together. I needed a banner to stamp the definition on so I just grabbed one of the KBS shapes from a recent file and resized it to accommodate the stamp design.

My Last Quilting Project of 2012

Twenty-twelve was the year I decided to get serious about sewing and it was the year I taught myself to quilt. I've always sewn a bit here and there. Nothing more grand than the occassional Halloween costume or fabric tote bag, though. Each time I would think about teaching myself to sew I would talk myself out of it, telling myself that I had enough things going on and that I didn't need another hobby. But I was (and am!) contantly inspired by fabric and notions and quilting and I had started following fabric and pattern designers and online fabric shops and pinning quilts and quilted projects here and there and I finally said to myself, "you CAN have more than one crafty hobby. There aren't any rules that say you can't!" and I literally dove into quilting.

The end of 2012 was a busy time and then with the holidays, I just didn't get around to finishing up a few of the partially completed quilts I've been wanting to finish up. So on the very last day of the year, I forgot about everything else that I could be doing and instead finishing quilting and binding this bright and fun tween quilt for my girl. And she loves it. I wasn't sure if she would because we've reached those hard tween years where one day she loves me and the next I am the worst mom ever. Ha! But she curls up with it every night, uses it when hanging out on the couch watching Pretty Little Liars or basketball games (yes, she is my sports girl!) and takes it on sleepovers. Success? Definitely!

 

I used mostly Riley Blake Doodlebug fabric that I've had for quite some time now. In fact, I had originally planned to use it for something else, that's how long I've had it! Oh well...

The green solid is a Moda Bella solid that I also had on hand that matched perfectly. I have to admit, I did not want to do the green solid. I am a big fan of using white or cream for my "white space" on quilts but this wasn't my quilt and Payton specifically requested that her quilt not have a lot of white so I obliged and I have to say.... I like it. A lot! It turned out much, much cuter than I thought it would!

In addition to the Doodlebug fabrics, I added a few other prints from Aneela Hooey's Sew Stitchy collection for Moda (the red with birds, white with blue birds, pink with little red flowers) for variety and interest.

Oh, and the pattern. I used THIS Lella Boutique pattern by Vanessa Goertzen. I have quite a few of her patterns awaiting the right fabric and the time to sew them! ;) I especially love THIS one and THIS one and THIS one too!

I pieced the back of the quilt together with scraps/leftovers from the front. It was a good way to disguise sewing the backing pieces together too. I didn't worry about matching up the heart design perfectly! ;)

I used a simple straight line stitch to quilt it. It was really quick and easy. I only quilted in the solid (green) area of the quilt. It turned out super cute and I will definitely do that again sometime!

My favorite part of the quilt, though, just might be the aqua/lime binding. Michael Miller Clown Stripe fabric is absolutely my "go-to" fabric for binding. Black/White is my fav but I have it in a few other colors like the one I used here as well. A girl needs options, ya know! ;)

14 Days of Valentine's Day Inspiration | Day #1 (embellished heart shaped boxes)

Because I love everything heart-shaped and because I am having so much fun decorating for Valentine's....

from now until February 14th I will be sharing 14 days of love-themed crafting. Not consecutive days but rather little bits of Valentine's inspiration from now until heart day. :)

For years I've been using these two boxes as part of my Valentine's decor but using them "as is". Why it took me until now to realize that I could alter them to suit my tastes and decorating style, we'll never know! ha!

Both of these boxes were packaging for some melamine plates from Pottery Barn Kids and ceramaic heart shaped bowls from Pottery Barn that I've had for years and years.

The white box was looking a little messy. It showed signs of marks from bumping up next to things and it orignally had red ribbons coming out the eyelets on each side. I removed the ribbons and then took my box outside and using a can of spray paint [ Krylon Whisper White ] that I had on hand, I gave my box a new coat of paint.

Once dry, I glued the Stampin' Up ruffled trim [ from the SU 2012 Spring Catalog ] around the edge of the box lid and replaced the original red ribbon with this cute pink & white chevron ribbon from a past Studio Calico kit.

To create the dangling apothecary label tag, I first die cut the label from Neenah White Cardstock using the exclusive die by Simon Says Stamp and punched a hole in the top. Then I stamped the coordinating "forever friend" stamp using Versamark Ink and embossed the design with Platinum WOW embossing powder. Because I loved the sentiment and design of the stamp but not necessarily the word "friend" for this particular project, I stampd the cute arrow with hearts image [ also from an exclusive Simon Says Stamp set ] with Versamark Ink and embossed it with Cable Car Red WOW embossing powder. I cut it into a strip, notched the ends and glued it right over the word friend! I love how no one but me [ and now you guys!!! ] know that this isn't the way it looked originally!

I also staped the "Happy Valentine's Day border [ from another exclusive Simon Says Stamp set ] and cut apart the greetings before placing a couple in the Tim Holtz glass vial. I replaced the cork lid, tied some silk ribbon around the vial and "hung" it from the bow by sticking a trinket pin in the top after going through the center of the bow. Super easy and a fun addition to any project. I'm a bit addicted to these little vial bottles!

I stamped and embossed the Simon Says Stamp heart image on the coordinating die cut paper and tucked the heart into the trinket pin. I added an additional trinket pin and a paper floral to finish the box.

The red box was still in good shape so I didn't have to prep the box before embellishing. This box was inspired by the wide burlap ribbon I've had in my stash for awhile and the new narrower burlap-like ribbon I just received from Stampin' Up. I love the look of all the naturals/cream with red!

I die cut the banners using my favorite banner die set from My Favorite Things and then I added some stamping and stamping & embossing using exclusive Simon Says Stamp stamp sets. 

To create the layered ribbow bow, I simply folded my ribbons making loops and layed them in a stack using my Tim Holtz scissors to keep them in place while adding the next ribbon. Then I took a piece of string [ when the ribbons aren't as think I use a stapler, it's easier! ] and tied it around the middle, drawing all the ribbons up into a bow. Then I knotted the string and hot glued the ribbon bow to my box. Before the glue sets up, I quickly tucked the banners under the bow, into the hot glue to hold them in place.

The white floral is one I've been hoarding for a couple years that was part of an old Making Memories collection. To dress it up a bit I sewed a Tim Holtz button to the center, then hot glued the floral to the center of the bow.

I hot glued a couple of Studio Calico wood veneer feathers under the floral and tucked some decorative trinket pins into the center while the glue was still hot.

I glued a bit of cream velvet ric rac trim around the box lid to finish it up.

With Sympathy (a card)

Sympathy cards are never fun to send however it's always great to have them on hand when you need one. This is also the card that inspired the creation of the tags in [ this post ].

I hadn't started out intending to do a monochromatic card but as it came together I found that I didn't want to introduce any color into this very elegant design. Even though this is a sympathy card, this design would work for many different occassions: wedding, anniversary, birthday, even a thank you.

I stamped several of the Stampin' Up Triple Treat Flower on the cream cardstock using a combination of Stampin' Up Crumb Cake and Illuminate Glimmer Inks. I would ink the stamp up with the Illuminate first and then dab it in the Crumb Cake before stamping. It gave the tone-on-tone a bit more substance and helped the design stand out without being too much color.

Then I simply punched out the flowers using the 2 coordination Stampin' Up punches and layered the flower adding some SU Pretties Florals in between layers for more depth and dimension and to add a touch of softness to the design. A pretty little rhinestone brad holds the floral together.

I die cut a heart from vellum and adhered the floral to the center of the heart, tucking some tulle underneath for elegant "leaves" and also some twine for added interest.

A decorative hat pin with beads (also from the SU Pretties kit) finishes off the accent.

The background was created by stamping the Hero Arts Leaf & Floral Background with the Stampin' Up Illuminate Glitter Ink. It's a watermark ink with a bit of shimmer to it and it's gorgeous in real life but kind of hard to see the detail in the photos.

 

Next, I stamped the Hero Arts newprint text over the watermarked background. I wiped a bit of the ink off the stamp before applying to my card to give it a bit more of a distressed appearance.

I embossed the Hero Arts "with Sympathy" greeting using the WOW Platinum embossing powder and then stamped the additional phrase with Hero Arts Wet Cement ink.

I stamped some coordinating hearts using the same inking technique as the flower, die cut them and adhered them to the card.

Finishing off the card by stamping a bit on the inside...

January Studio AE Blog Hop from Technique Tuesday

Happy 10th of the month! 

It's time for another Studio AE Blog Hop and this month we're featuring the January 2013 Studio AE Stamp Set, Be Mine.

Valentine's projects are always some of my very favorite to create. I adore the white/cream + pink + red (and sometimes aqua!) color schemes that are prevailant in Valentine's decor.

Last year I created some die cut/stamped and prettied up hearts that are one of my favorite decor items that I've ever created [ check out those hearts HERE ] and this year I want to add a few more paper crafted items to my Valentine's home decorating.

Here are the 3 tags I created for you today showcasing Ali's January Studio AE stamp set:

I used Tim Holtz' large steel rule tag die to create the 2 larger sized tags like this first one below:

I love that with these steel rule dies you can create your tag out of a wide array of mediums (think felt, fabric, grungeboard and more!) and it cuts it perfectly every time! And these are not some little itty bitty dinky sized tags either! These are good sized and give you a nice base in which to ink it up...

I used one of Technique Tuesday's 4x6 clear stamp sets to create the chevron backgound design and then Tim's Spun Sugar Distress Stain to add the soft pink color to the Prima resist butterflies. 

I used one of Ali's sentiments to stamp directly on the tag and then I embellished! So fun!

The next tag incorporates the cute little mini bag and tag from the most recent Studio Calico kit (it can also be purchased individually, see below). I love the addition of the mini bag as it provides an interesting base in which to embellish and "tuck" the stamped tag into! You guys know how much I love layering and tucking tags here and there on my projects! ha!

This particular tag incorporates some "leftovers" from a recent card I made (and will be sharing here tomorrow!). I had played with some new (and old) Stampin' Up goodies + other inky goodness and had leftover flower petals in this wonderful white/cream tone on tone finish. I thought they would be perfect for this tag.

Instead of using Ali's long script phrase I only stamped a portion of one of the long phrases along the top of my tag so that it's visible while tucked inside the mini bag.

The last tag I'm going to share today uses Tim's large tag die again. For this one, I stamped a love-themed greeting from one of Ali's older stamp sets onto the tag a couple of times using a watermark ink and embossed the stamping with WOW Platinum embossing powder (my favorite!). 

I added a plastic clear flower with a metal brad to the center of the tag, tied on some pretty ribbon and then stamped one of Ali's long script greetings on vellum using the Memories Unicorn white ink (this ink is ah-mazing!). I notched one end to create a banner and stapled it to the tag. Easy peasy and oh so elegant.

This is the first of several posts over the next few days that will feature new love-themed paper crafted decor. So in love with these and I have so many ideas running through my head! I'm crossing my fingers hoping I get a chance to work on all of them!
